Eurobarometrul special 492, realizat în 2019, arată că 86% dintre cetățenii UE sunt de acord că ar trebui să existe mai multă cooperare în domeniul securității cibernetice în domeniul energiei între țările UE pentru a asigura accesul la energie sigură.
Infrastructura critică, cum ar fi distribuția de energie electrică, alimentarea cu apă, transportul și telecomunicațiile, toate depind de sistemele IT pentru management, supraveghere și control. Sistemele de control industrial, numite și SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), sunt de fapt esențiale pentru menținerea funcționalității societății moderne. Aceste funcții includ colectarea, procesarea și stocarea mesajelor de jurnal, gestionarea, facturarea în timp real și multe altele.
